I bought my first digital camera in Canada in 2000, and was immediately struck by its potential. I'd previously owned assorted cameras while I was growing up, and despite thinking I'd got a good roll of film to send to TruPrint, was always disappointed with the results when the prints came back . But digital was different - provided the camera had an LCD display (and the first ones didn't always), you could instantly see the result, and more importantly do something about a bad picture and take another! A couple of years later I bought a copy of Photoshop imaging software and have happily surrounded myself with a pile of 'how to' books that can make a basically good picture very good.
I've since done a handful of weddings and portrait shoots for friends, and it's always great to see the results adorn their walls or appear on greetings cards. And while I'm quite critical of my own work, several people have gone out of their way to encourage me to give semi-pro photography a go. It would be foolish and arrogant to claim to be the best photographer in the area - I'm not - but I can guarantee results that you'll be pleased with, even if this means a second shoot when 'junior' is happier, or the weather is a bit better.There are also work arounds for poor weather on wedding days, and I always include a back-up plan, recce of venue, and full explanation of how we can get around 'acts of God'! My marketing plan for the immediate future is word of mouth, and my service will be a personal, consultative one, with me providing suggestions if you haven't got any ideas. But it won't be a 'take it or leave it' arrangement - I'm very aware that YOU have to be happy with the result, and that's a key driving force.
Photography is my second job, so I'm neither wanting to charge big bucks, nor do I need to make a monthly target - a bit of extra cash is a bonus. While you will get a thoroughly professional service, I do admit to testing the market a little, and haven't ruled out going full time in the future, but for now it should be a low pressure and fun experience, capturing pictures of you, your kids, your wedding, your dog, whatever you hold precious. You wouldn't ask for nice pics of something that didn't matter to you, which is why I will always give 100% getting them for you.
